Outdoor Mural at Flint Hill Elementary School, Vienna, VA

I was asked by the Flint Hill Elementary Art Teacher to design a mural for the Art Courtyard. I sketched out designs for four walls and gathered a team of about 10 volunteers who could help me paint the buildings, animals, insects, and scenery I designed. I managed the project, supervised volunteers as well as painted a lot of the images. I purchased some exterior paint and also received donations for some of the colors we needed. We used a projector at night to get designs on some of the walls. All walls needed to be primed first. We could only work when the weather was cooperative.
The project took two years and was completed in spring of 2016.

Ideas and Sketches

We sent a flyer to every student to ask for drawings of ideas for the mural. Out of 700 students we got about 250 responses. These were two ideas that were used, as well as others.
These are my sketches done on vellum overtop photos of blank walls, as well as photos of walls in progress. Scaffolding was needed to reach high places.
